    Midwife / TREATMENT

    Qualification: First-level professional higher education
    Length of studies: 3 years (6 semesters)
                                  120 CP (180 ECTS)
    Language: Latvian
    Accreditation: accredited for full accreditation period of 6 years
    Study objectives:
    -    acquirement of midwifery education and development of relevant competence that would ensure preparation of competent and professional staff, thus encouraging improvement of national programme of the public health care and encouraging of health system by providing change of generations within the framework of health care system in the state in the aggregate;
    -    to ensure acquirement of the education in the midwifery programme in the course of branch and general education including the humanitarian and social sciences;
    -    to develop in the students active way of obtaining information, critical evaluation and application of the theoretical and practical knowledge within prehospital and hospital period;
    -    to create conditions, to encourage formation of competitive professionals in accordance with the first-level higher professional education and the requirements defined by the labour market and the European Community;
    -    to encourage Professional growth and intellectual potential by developing the research in the midwifery programme.

    Requirements to applicants:
    -    secondary education
    -    knowledge of official state language
    -    motivation paper
    -    passed competition of the applicants.

    Description of curriculum:
    -    In the first academic year the student acquires and deepens his/her knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of a sound human being emphasizing the female, environment and its influence on the human’s health, basics of the interpersonal communication, basic concepts of sociology, pharmacology, acquires skills of first aid. Undergoes the clinical nursing practice in the hospitals of the city under supervision of the practice managers.
    -    In the second academic year the student acquires the practical and theoretical knowledge in the work with patients of various profiles mainly emphasizing the health and diseases of a female and a pregnant woman.
    -    In the third academic year the student more profoundly acquires knowledge and skills in the work with a female and a pregnant woman.
    -    Student elaborates research qualification work, in which she/he reveals his/her theoretical and practical knowledge in the clinical subjects and passes Qualification examination consisting of verification of his/her theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
    -    Upon completion of the curriculum the college-leaver is entitled to work in any health care establishment of Latvia as well as in the health care establishments of the European Community. They are entitled to continue their education in post-diploma educational programmes and in the higher education establishments.
